Well, well, well- The 4th of July is now over. All of us here had a sweet and patriotically celebrated weekend, and we’re just getting back to the hustle and bustle of the biz. And with the hustle, we’ve got a variety of  flower cooler [our version of water cooler (smells better)] topics buzzing around our design studio, and I’ve taken the liberty to translate them into the language of flowers.

Yazmin was thoroughly amazed by the fireworks last night at Sandburg in Coon Rapids.  She says that she had actually gotten up to leave after what she thought was the finale, only to be delighted to an additional 20 minutes of a dazzling display.  An extra happy Fourth of July to you City of Coon Rapids! We appreciate the extra effort!  She’s been working a lot more with carnations (flower meaning: fascination, distinction, love) today. **Additional note from the blogger: The fireworks in Champlin kept me awake for awhile longer than I expected too.  Just playin’ the party-pooper**

I, Rachel the delivery driver extraordinaire, novice dish garden designer and sometime blogger, am talking all about the recent UFA trades in the NHL. Oh, the drama! Jaromir Jagr returns to the league after a stint in the Russian Super League and who does he sign with? THE PHILADELPHIA FLYERS?!! Whoa, I bet there are a lot of Pittsburgh Penguins fans wanting to send Jagr  yellow roses (flower meaning: betrayal), amongst other things. Pens fans might as well order a yellow rose or two for Maxime Talbot while they’re at it, as he also signed a long-term deal with the other Pennsylvania hockey club.  Yellow roses can also mean:  friendship, jealousy, infidelity, or apology, a broken heart, intense emotion, dying love- so don’t be afraid to order a lovely arrangement with yellow roses .  All of us Minnesota Wild fans wanting, nay, needing something to look forward to, can think Stars of Bethlehem Hyacinth (meaning:hope) with the signing of Dany Heatley and Devin Setoguchi.  I can’t wait to see what happens- obviously, I’m thinking hockey in July.

Melissa, our supreme floral designer, has been talking all about the Casey Anthony trial.  She gives us all updates and is anxiously awaiting the verdict now that the jury is in deliberation.  No matter the outcome, Marigolds (meaning: pain and grief) seem only appropriate.

The boss-man Steve continues to go fishing in Minnesota and relaying his adventures to us ladies at the shop.  Can’t remember what happened this weekend but I think he did catch some fish.  Sorry Steve, take some Belles of Ireland with you next time (meaning: luck).

We do custom arrangements of all sizes.

Congratulations to the 2011 Graduates!

Showing up to a grad party with  fresh flowers :

How classy!  How thoughtful!

Often the most impressive arrangements are made by Designer’s Choice, letting the florists’ creativity flow through their skilled and hard-working hands.  Dawn, Megan, Melissa, Sara, and Yazmin are doing amazing work with the latest summer blooms!

Or maybe you’re feeling a little sentimental? Why not send your 2011 grad away with a nice green or blooming plant for the dorm room?  A plant will spruce up any college living situation and serve as a green reminder to phone home.

Because it’s not everyday that you get a free potato!

Yes, Main Floral of Anoka is doing the weird potato thing again.
You know the… “Get One, Give One, Grow One.”

Get One.

Get a Free Potato.  Bet it feels good to have a free potato in your pocket! Last year folks came in with grins, asking for their free potato. We loved the smirks and silly comments about our free potatoes. No purchase is necessary.

Give One.

We give, you give. Not in time for food shelf awareness month, of course we’re always late, but the food shelf needs our help every month. We will be collecting food and making trips to our local foodshelf through the last half of April. Drop off your food donations at… Main Floral at 115 East Main Street in Anoka Minnesota.

Grow One.

Just in time for Earth Day wouldn’t you say! Planting seeds for tomorrow is a total earth day thing and great fun to involve the kids. Below check out our brief beginning tips for growing your own potatoes. Our free potatoes keep giving if you plant them!

Getting started, growing your potato plant.

Step 1. Prep the seed. Cut the potato into several chunks with an ‘eye’ on each chunk. The new plants will grow from the ‘eye’ of the potato piece. Air-dry for 24 hours or lightly dust pieces with sulfur powder or bordeaux mixture to help prevent fungi. No need for chemical treatments when planted in dry, warm soil. Please research the ideal time for planting potatoes in your neck of the woods, since every region is different. Step 2. Prepare the soil using a trowel in compost rich soil. Loosen the soil so that the potato can send down roots easily. Make sure to pick a well-drained, sunny spot of the garden. Be sure the ‘eye’ faces up when pressing potato piece into soil. Step 3.  Build up a mound of mulch over the potato. Oak leaf mold is the perfect mounding mulch. Water gently, thoroughly wet the mulch evenly. As the vines start to peek through the mound, begin feeding them with a half-strength foliar spray. For more steps, please read more on maintaining and harvesting a flowering potato plant in this really nice article: plant potatoes. There are many different growing techniques, here’s another site that might help… wikihow growing potatoes or just Google it! Thanks for participating in the Free Potato “Get one, Give one, Grow one” with us!

Is Your ‘Local’ Florist Really Long-Distance?

When you’re thinking of sending flowers, you’re not thinking of getting ripped off.  Your mind is on the flowers. Flowers are a great way to celebrate a birthdays, cheer up a friend who’s not feeling well or just brighten someone’s day. Your local florist is just a phone call away, or so you think. Experts from www.aboutflowers.com  say “Some unscrupulous telemarketing firms are posing as local florists, charging you higher fees and taking business away from the legitimate flower shops in your town.” secret scam

Alerting Secret Scam

The local deception works like this… A telemarketer buys a bogus advertisement in your phonebook or telephone directory. The company may use your town’s name in its own to make you believe it’s local. Or, the name of a legitimate local florist may be listed with a different local phone number.

When you call, you’re unknowingly forwarded to an out-of-town telemarketing operation. The telemarketer takes your order and credit card information for payment, then forwards your order to a real local florist. The telemarketer not only adds a processing fee but may also add  a percentage of the total purchase.  Some scamming telemarketers can be even more devious, they don’t actually add additional charges but minus money from the total bouquet value before they send it to a local florist. This usually goes undetected by the sender, however the recipient gets skimpy flowers. Unfortunately you won’t find out that you’ve been scammed until read your credit card statement. You may find out you were scammed in the worst way, by finding out your flowers were never delivered as ordered to value or never delivered at all!

How to be in the know and protect yourself

(from www.aboutflowers.com)

Don’t just cross your fingers… follow a few tips.

magnified phone "who are you calling?"1. Ask neighbors, family, friends, and co-workers for recommendations.
2. Deal only with shops that list a street address with their phone number. If you’re asking directory assistance for a number, also ask for the street number and address. If there isn’t one, consider doing business with another florist.
3. Check out the florist you’re considering with the local Better Business Bureau and consumer protection officials in your area. Or, if you’re ordering flowers from a local shop in another city or state, contact the consumer protection officials there. Ask if they have any unresolved consumer complaints on file. Also ask them to verify the street address.
4. Ask the florist to itemize the charges. In addition to the price of the arrangement, most florists charge a delivery fee and taxes if you live in the same state.
5. Ask the florist for directions to the shop. If they hesitate or refuse, consider this a red flag, and avoid doing business with the florist.

When a Rose is a Ruse: What to Do If You’ve Been Scammed?

If you placed an order through a wire service, a toll-free number, or a local florist, call the toll-free number of the florist and describe the problem. Many wire services will work with the filling florist to fix the problem or refund your money. If your arrangement was never delivered, and you paid by credit card, you can dispute the charges with the card issuer. Can I get a what what?!

Now stop being so childish!   Pussy Willow Fun Facts:

Pussy Willow

Pussy willow is a name given to many of the smaller species of the willows and sallows when their furry catkins are young in early spring. Some of these species include:

♥ Goat willow or goat sallow, a small tree native to northern Europe and northwest Asia.

♥ Grey willow or grey sallow, a small tree native to northern Europe

♥ American pussy willow, native to northern North America.

Before the male catkins of these species come into full flower they are covered in fine, greyish fur, leading to a fancied likeness to tiny cats, also known as “pussies“. The catkins appear long before the leaves, and are one of the earliest signs of spring. At other times of year trees of most of these species are usually known by their ordinary names.

"Pussy Cat"

A catkin is a slim, cylindrical flower cluster, with no petals, usually wind-pollinated. They contain many, usually unisexual flowers, arranged closely along a central stem. The word catkin is derived from the Dutch katje, meaning “kitten”, on account of the resemblance to a kitten’s tail. For more information on “pussy willow” click this link Define Pussy Willow

Pussy Willow is often appreciated as a kind of symbolism for spring, the awakening of trees and plants. Spring is celebrated with all of the first flowers to bloom. Early Spring flowers; Pussy willow, tulips, daffodil, and hyacinth are among the favorites this time of year. We’re excited at Main Floral to welcome spring back!

Winter brings a beautiful mix of glee and woebegone.

The Territory

Working in the flower shop is an awesome privilege. However, it does come with many challenges of the seasons… especially in the cold winter of Minnesota. Delivering flowers in extreme temperatures is no small task. We are always evaluating the outside temperature to make sure our packaging is sufficient. We have to protect our flowers from getting frostbite or getting shockingly cold. Our delivery van has to be warm at all times since we’re constantly shuttling precious cargo. Afternoon deliveries can take a little longer, since night falls early we can’t see your house numbers so easily! It comes with the territory, we’re working florists ”Minnesota style”.

Can’t avoid every woe.

We’ve come up with many strategies to deal with woes of winter which makes the bitter cold not so bad. There are a few that we need your help with still. Although the roads are covered in snow and sidewalks get pretty slippery we are determined to deliver flowers and messages of love. Recently we had a slip and fall that caused more than just a few bruises over the holidays. We’re pretty upset about it, not to mention the pain it caused our poor driver. We’re wishing her warm thoughts and a speedy recovery. Please help us by shoveling and removing slick ice  from your sidewalks for all delivery people in your neighborhood.

Despite the woes of winter, glee is all around us!

We are definitely fortunate to work with exquisite flowers in a season of which nothing much grows. Flowers are magical in their own earth-born way and their mortality is appreciated with our everlasting love for them. Life is cherished in any form especially the beautiful. We don’t even mind the sticky sap on our hands from winter greens. Pine and cedar are a few of our favorites and worth the extra effort and stickiness this time of year. So we take the bad with the good and skip around the flowers with joy. It’s always sunny at Main Floral even on a sub-zero day!
