Gladiola
The Flower of August
The August birth flower, Gladiola, represents moral integrity, strength of character, and also infatuation. Its name comes from the Latin word for sword “Gladius.” It is believed that the Gladiolus species was given its name because of its Roman Gladiator sword shaped stem. Its romantic flowering blooms are also beautiful enough to pierce the heart. Gladioli are mostly native to southern Africa and tropical areas of the world. Because of their popularity, Gladioli are widely cultivated and show off many bright colors. The Gladiolus species are also known as ”sword lilies”, “Wild Iris”, and “Glads”.
